I've had my bout with Graves dz.since 1996. I went the PTU rout first for one year than it
seemed to go into a remission for almost a year. Now it is back in all it's glory with the
heart palpatations, tremors and mood swings.I was recently dosed with I 131 12mc. I feel on the
mend again and hope the symptoms will all be gone soon..My life feels like a roller coaster
ride but I have faith it will even out soon.I hope and pray others will who suffer from this
dz. will feel compfort in knowing they are not alone in the battle against Graves dz. or other
Thyroid disorders.I have had hypothyroid also in the past for years also. Peace and good

I was diagnosed with Graves in January of 1996 at the age of 24. I had been to several doctors.
After awhile I felt as though my doctors were saying, "hypochondiac" and rooling their eyes as
soon as I walked in. I knew something was wrong with me! Not only did I feel terrible but I was
moody and had terrible bouts with deppresion. Finally, in January of 1996 my heart rate went up
to 180 beats per minute, I had lost 20 pounds, my hair was falling out and my marriage was
beginning to suffer. My husband took me to the emergency room. They actually called the police
to speak with me because they thought I was having a "bad trip" from drugs. I was ready to
scream! I insisted they test me for a thyroid disorder because it ran in my family and that's
exactly what it was. Later that same year I had the radioactive iodine treatment after
insisting for several months the medication was not working for me. I finally found a great
doctor and my life has improved so much! My marriage is stronger than ever and emotionaly I am
much better. Some days are still difficult and my synthroid level is still not correct but I do
not contemplate suicide everyday anymore. Those of you who are going through this, please..
don't give up! If anyone needs a listening ear, please feel free to e-mail me. I know what you
are going through.

Just wanted to see if I could find anyone out here who may know something about this disease.
I just got back from Boise, Idaho (183 miles from home) where I saw a specialist who diagnosed
me with Graves disease. Tues & Wed I'll be there again to have the radioactive iodine
treatment done. I tossed my cigarettes out the car window on the way home and have swore to
never smoke again. God help me that I have quit in time...I already have Lupus, now Graves
disease..am only 48, married to a wonderful man, have 5 children & 2 step, and 9 grandchildren
and 3 more due this year. I don't need anymore bad news. Can you direct me to someplace
where I can find information on this please. I guess I'm just feeling a little blue right
now...thanks for listening.

Do you have Graves' Disease or related?: My fater in law
Comments:
My fater in law is very anti computor and a hard core red neck. He has worked since he was
13 years old and now he has been diagnosed with graves disease. He has severe mood swings and
double vision. The doctors say they are going to try to put him on some drugs for a year if
that doesn't work out then he will have to have his thyroid out. He runs his own construction
business and the double vision is severely hampering that. I came to this site to try to get
some encourageing information for him. Hopefully it will help him out. Thank you for the
information.

Any new links I should add?: This was very helpful
Comments:
My daughter was diagnosed in October '98 as she had all of the typical symptoms as well as the
"staring eyes" She just looked different. She is in the process of deciding course of
treatment, and is leaning toward surgery, because of the eye involvement and the sterility
issue. We're going to have to make a decision within the next week or so. She is a dancer and
actress and this disease has been very dehibilitating for her as well as an emotional
rollercoaster. Our family is hanging in there, and with her now willing to take the Tapazole
and not forget she is becoming "human" again. Why didn't you have RAI or surgery? I am so
glad to hear that you are doing well emotionally. My best friend's sister had Graves, was
emotionally very depressed, poorly diagnosed and inadequately treated, and committed suicide.
My friend feels that had the doctors only been better equipped, she would be alive. I think
you are so lucky to have not only helped yourself, but the lengths you've gone to to help
others will, in turn, help you. Thanks for the Web site. It's very cool! Claudia

Comments:
I was diagnosed with graves with a level of 21.5.
I had radioactive iodine which brought my level to
less than 1. At the time of diagnoses, I weighed
99 lbs. I am 5'3" and now am stuck at 125 lbs.
With my level where it is (even on levoxyol) I can't get to a weight where I am happy. My
one eye bulged and not the other which is quite attractive. My doctor said surgery can fix
that but who can afford it? My hair, too, is dry and brittle and my skin is like a snake.
Reading your story was like reading my own and I wish more people understood what we go
through with this disease. It is not only terrifying for the patient but causes panic within
the family unit. It truly is a terrible disease and treatment and understanding among the
medical profession is a necessity that just is not there. Keep up the good work and let's
hope for the best for all of us.
