I have just been diagnosed with Graves' disease and the dr. gives me three choices.....surgery, anti-thyroid meds, or radio active iodine. I have hper. I don't know what todo and I am reading all I can to learn about it. I have had such a rough time emotionally and I had a baby in June. So. I thought my symptons were BABY related or postpartum. What should I do. I don't want surgery and their are many side effects to the med's ...? My dr. said that probably no matter what I choose I will eventually become hypo? HELP! thanks rina

I am looking for information on Graves'disease. I am looking for people with the same condition that I can talk to about different problems and treatments. I have not been able to find much information that doesn't contradict itself or other information I am frustrated. I am tired and want information. Book stores are hopeless, so here I am! This whole disease has been a nightmare, combined with my ignorance about the condition. I could go on and on in this vein but it would be quite dull! If you an help it would be greatly appreciated.

I just found out that I have Graves' Disease yesterday. I came to these pages to try to get help to the question of how to treat it. My endocronologist gave me three options, and I'm leaning toward the radioactive iodine, but I don't want to be on medic ne for the rest of my life. I'm enjoying learning more about it here.

Was sick for 1 1/2 years and didn't know why. Just had radio-active iodine last week and pre-scription for Inderal and feel sooo much better. I know it's only the start and a year from now will feel great! What a relief.

Hi! this is an update from 1/8/98. In Jan. I went for my yearly & was on the high side of normal levels. So I went back in June and had it checked again & it was the same, so we lowered the Synthroid & go back in a week or 2. In between time, I was suf ering from Hot Flashes & nite sweates since Spring, then no period in Jun or Jul. At age 46 I thought it might be possible for early menopause, since I understand it's possible with Graves. So I went to my new OB-GYN & she confirmed what I heard, that a blood test could be taken to check if I was. The test showed that I AM ! She, is also very receptive to herbal remedies, & so to relieve the hot flashes & nites sweats I found an herbal remedy that has works very well (I'm an herbalist). In the meanti e, I listen to my body for any changes, & all is well.

I think above all I find your site very `human' - someone who speaks from the heart. Keep up the good work. I certainly valued the insight you provide and the commitment you show to inform others about Graves Disease. You are absolutely correct in your pe ception about the fact that many doctors do not know much about the disease itself, leave alone the fact that the disease can cause havoc to ordinary lives! Hopefully, your site will show people that they can keep asking questions and seeking answers from doctors; where such answers don't readily come then move on to someone more competent. I think your site also gives others in a similar position the strength to understand their disease and make changes including seeking medical help. Keep up the good wo k. Well, I just got the diagnosis last Tuesday, a week after I recieved my son's diagnosis of Hodgkins disease. Is Graves a stress related disease? The proof's in the pudding ~ wouldn't you say! It only took at least 11 years to find mine, even though there as been thyroid trouble in the family for years!!!!!! I don't have a lot of time to write right now, and haven't seen the Endocrinologist yet( waiting for the referral to go through) but at least got to read most of your stuff. A lot of stuff I have gone through over the years makes much more sense to m now. I'm not nuts, lazy, or hypocondriatic either!!!!!!!!! Mabe not the best speller but not crazy. I have to try to catch some zzz's cause it's back to the hospital with my son tomorrow for more tests and stuff. I will try to visit your sight again soon Best of luck to you. Leslie Simons p.s. I turned 46 in April.
