Comments: I was diagnosed with Graves (hyper) about three years ago and visited this site at that time (and many times since). I'm very happy to report that I'm in remission and have been off Tapazole for 18 months. My condition has been borderline during that time but has not gone out of control. At the time I was diagnosed my thyroid scan showed 85% uptake (very hyperactive) and I was very sick with most of the usual symptoms. I elected to hold off on radiation against the advise of my endocrinologist. He has been supportive of my conservative approach even though conventional wisdom seems to dictate immediate radiation therapy. It seems like in so many of the stories I'm reading, we are not being encouraged by doctors to learn about the condition and exercize different options. There IS some chance of remission with this condition but many never take it before they receive radiation and commit themselves to a lifetime of Synthroid (which can take years to regulate). My advise to those of you who are newly diagnosed is learn as much as you can; get copies of your blood tests and monitor your own levels; and don't hesitate to ask doctors questions. Even though similar symptoms are experienced by Graves sufferers, the disease can affect individuals in very different ways and shouldn't be dealt with like a cookie-cutter disease. You are the master of your own destiny not the doctor!

I had my thyroid removed during my last pregnancy due to a goiter that was sufficating my esphogus. So I still have a thyroid disease, but when you go to a new doctor, get this, "how can you have thyroid disease, if you don't have a thyroid" Well I guess you can send them to school, buy them and education but you cant buy them common sense. Take care, I wish you well, great web site. thanks katy
