Comments: What a great home page with heaps of info . I suffer from gd recently diagnosed. In Tasmania there were a lot of people in the seventies suffering from under active thyroids in Tas so they started putting it into the bread as the soil was Iodine deficient. It seems crazy that my thyroid is now in overdrive.

Comments: I was diagnosed in '87 and it took a couple of years to feel normal again. But it does happen and you will feel much better as soon as you start taking your meds. Great webpage!

Comments: Thank you for sharing your story, I've been searching desperately for ANY information, I was diagnosed 4 years ago at age 21 after having my first son with Graves Disease, everyone thought I was on drugs, I could not stay awake for more than an hour at a time and I lost an excessive amount of weight after giving birth. I was giving radioactive Iodine and put on synthroid, well it has been a CONSTANT struggle with NO answers, every 3 weeks my blood has been taken over these past 4 years and it continues to go from one extreme to another, I feel like I am on a constant emotional roller coaster as the dr. increases my synthroid or decreases it in LARGE amounts at a time, and I found out this week that my thyroid has come back and the blood levels are extremly high again. I feel so helpless and so un informed about this whole thing, seems like none of these doctors have any information or any answers, anything would be so greatly appreciated, I would love to talk to someone dealing with similar problems! thank you Jessica

Comments: I am 35 years old and was just recently diagnosed with Graves' disease. Severe muscle weakness to the point that I would wake some nights and not be able to move my legs was what first caused me to think something was wrong with me. I had these episodes for over 4 years and just wrote them off as lack of potassium or something. I had a feeling that something "was" wrong, but being a die-hard man- I just blew it off. The episodes gradually got worse until one night they were so bad that my wife insisted I go to a doctor. One reason I didn't want to go to a doctor is that I figured they wouldn't take me seriously or would just hastily prescribe something. I was told about a new woman doctor in our area and I went to see her the morning after my last attack. She was wonderful, even got out her medical book to look up symptoms. I had very similar symptoms to hyperkeratonic periodic paralysis. She got in touch with a neurologist and took some blood samples just to make sure there was nothing wrong with my thyroid. She called the next afternoon to say she had cancelled the neurologist and instead called a endocrinologist. I am taking 20mg Tapazole and 20mg propranalol 3 times a day to lower my levels. I will go for RAI later. I for one, am looking forward to gaining some weight back, as well as resuming my sports activities.
