Comments: My 18 year old daughter just called me from college in Minnesota and said she has hyperthyroidism--will be tested next week at Mayo Clinic to determine what is causing it--hope only an infection, but she has enlarged thyroid on right side--symptoms started early january after the "flu". I saw her in December for break and she was fine, but had lost 50 pounds and was complaining of fatigue (college stress?), insomnia (late nights?) and bone pain (not eating right?). So you see I am shocked that this is happening--her thyroid labs were abnormal so she is getting scanned next week. Wish us luck!

Comments: I found out I had graves disease when I try to have a child. It was very hard to hear this news because my husband and I had tried for 9 months all ready without luck and found out when I went and saw my doctor for a check up. After I had my thryoid killed off by radiation we started trying again in 6 months when we knew it was safe to try again. I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl on May 19, 2000. This is a hard disease to have but, you can still have a great life with medication and your doctors help.

Comments: I was diagnosed with Graves in 1995, after my first child was born. It was wierd how it hit. I lost all of my pregnancy weight and an extra 10 lbs within six weeks of child birth. My hair fell out in clumps and I started have severe migraines. When my daughter was 5 months old, the doctor finally realized that after CT Scans and MRI's and more weight loss, he should run some bloodwork. He was dumbfounded at my thyroid levels and sent me immediately to an endocrinologist who gave me no choices but immediate RAI. I could not take anything to ward off the Thyroid Storms, and boy were there plenty of storms. I ended up in the hospital with no white blood cells. Somehow, I became pregnant 3 months later and I was advised to abort the baby. NO WAY!! I made through 8 months when my son made an early appearance, healthy mind you, and my thyroid finally stabilized about that time. 3 months after his birth, Grave's eye disease hit, and it hit hard. I had chronic double vision and a compressed optical nerve. I was on steroids for 3 months and then they added one month of radiation to the orbits of the eyes and finally tapered me off of the steroids over the following two months. I eneded up having three reconstructive surgeries to my left eye lids and one to my right eye lid. Now, 4 years later, I am healthy again. My only reminder of Grave's is the pill I take every morning and the fatigue that I get on a regular basis. I can live with that, at least I made it!

Comments: I was diagnosed with GD yesterday, 2/1/2001. I immediately went to the bookstore to find a book to read about it. I recommend "The Thyroid Solution" by Ridha Arem, M.D. I read the first chapter and thought the book described my mother instead of me, although she has never been diagnosed with GD. Shortly after I had my two year old daughter, I was at my ob/gyn for a check-up. He felt my neck and said he thought he could feel my thyroid gland and shouldn't be able to. He ordered a TSH test, and it was borderline hyperactive. Repeated the test three months later, and received the same result. Three months after that, I went through a very traumatic experience. My fourteen-year-old niece, who I was very close to, drowned. I started having what I thought were anxiety attacks. I couldn't sleep, and I gained 20 pounds because I ate constantly. I also had severe PMS with crying episodes that I could not stop. I had no idea that all of these symptoms could be my thyroid. I thought it was just the grieving process. I went to my PCP because I thought I had pulled a muscle in my back, and asked her to order another TSH test because my OB/GYN had told me to keep check on it. It came back severely overactive. She sent me to an endocrinologist. By the time I got in to the specialist, three months had passed, and I was feeling a lot better. Asymptomatic is what he called it. He repeated the tests and performed the antibody test, and guess what, it was GD, and he put me on PTU. I argued with the doctor because I didn't think that I needed treatment since I was feeling well. After reading "The Thyroid Solution", I am thankful that my condition was diagnosed before I got severe. Now I know the symptoms, and if it happens again, I will know what is happening, but I am still wondering if all of the problems that my mother have had could have been GD as well.

Comments: I also was diagnosed with Graves Disease. Although my thyroid was removed in 1998, I still have the symptoms from the disease. I would appreciate any info you could give me to control the moodiness and aches and pain.

Comments: Last July I found out I had a thyroid problem. It was overactive and really doing a number on my body and mind.I decided to have radioactive iodine treatment which made the thyroid underactive resulting in weight gain and several other problems.Right now I am in the process of getting the correct levels of Synthroid.Hopefully this will bring my life back to normal again. For a person who has never been seriously sick my entire life this disease has made my life very difficult.

Comments: I have been diagnosed with Graves Disease (Hyperthyroidism) today. My symptoms all began about 6 months ago when my son was six months old. I'm pretty confused about the whole thing. I had a VERY stressful pregnancy and had my tubes tied after he was born so i'm not sure if it was "caused" from these things or if it is inherited. I don't know my father's side of the family to research it! I am a single mother of four children so i'm taking this rather hard because i am constantly tired, feel like i'm dehydrated, and starving all the time. I also don't seem to have any patience for anything! I felt better and as if I wasn't completely alone in this after reading some of the stories although some of them seem to be a constant battle. Anyway, now I have to see my physician to figure out what treatment is best! I'll update later...
