Comments: I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in 1997. I was told that both sides of the thyroid are bad, thus, making it Graves disease. I have been on propylthiouracil since November of 1997. After initially taking the drug, I checked back into my medical records to try and see when my first symptoms appeared. Looks like prior to my daughter's birth in 1977. I went undiagnosed for all those years. When I first began taking the drug, I felt great, since I had been so far down due to the disorder, any improvement would have been great. However, lately, I am experincing symptoms of depression, lots of aches and pains, trouble seeing, spots in my eyes, etc. And my current physician does not care, since I am not a man. I know I need to find another doctor, but I am getting in that "rut" of depression, giving up, etc, again. Keep up this website. It is giving me the feeling of not being alone. Maybe I will find that new doctor Monday............

Comments: Hi. It's been nice hearing about others with this crazy disease. I was diagnosed in 1982 and had surgery to remove part of my thyroid. I went on synthroid and the drs had the attitude like "well, there you go - you're fixed. Um, NOT. I have ups and downs like a roller coaster. I asked my dr for a referral to an endocriniologist and he looked at me with disdain - telling me I didn't need one. After reading your site, I am convinced to get a new dr. I gotta wait til I get some health ins. first. I noticed a woman at work the other day. She definitely has a goiter and hyper actions. I tried to talk to her but she wouldn't listen. The way I found out about mine, was a friend of mine told me she thought I needed to go to a psychiatrist. I still don't even know what I did to make her say that. I went to our family dr and he saw the goiter right away. My surgeon told me in the old days victims of graves disease were actually put away into insane asylums. Scared me! I raced him to the operating room. I had a resident dr come in to my hosp room the night before my surgery and tried to talk me out of it. Sorry to go on and on but it is so wonderful to talk to someone who knows what I am talking about. I've been alone for a long time. I got on this site, because of the woman at work and I am very thankful I did. Please email me and let me know you got this.
Thanks.

Comments: Hi fellow sufferers!!! I was diagnosed with Graves disease when I was 18 but believe I had already had it for at least 2 years. During late 2000 and through to 2001 I went to my doctor so many times just not feeling right. I seriously thought I was going mad, those shaking hands really bothered me! Finally saw my own doctor, had a blood test and had a t3 of 21.3 and a t4 of 67. Stopped taking tablets after 1 1/2 years 7 months ago and thought things were going well until the dreaded blood test last week. Am now back on tablets and awaiting an appointment with a surgeon to have a partial thyroidectomy! Its great to have a website like this read other peoples stories and to sympathise! Any e-mails would be gladly recieved at ski_bird03'yahoo.co.uk
